Counselling Can Help Improve Poor Self-Esteem

counselling for poor self esteemA counsellor will help you to explore where your feelings about yourself came from. In therapy we may find that there is little evidence to support all the negative stuff that we believe about ourselves.

Therapies to Improve Poor Self-Esteem

As our thoughts have such a strong influence on our lives, a counsellor will challenge you to think differently about yourself and the world. A type of therapy called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (read What Is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is very well researched and has been shown to work in treating poor self-esteem.

Your counsellor may also include some strategies to help you think positively and embrace yourself for who you are, an imperfect being, just like the rest of us. When we change the way we think, we can improve our confidence and our self-esteem.

Your counsellor may also challenge you to explore any hurts or mistakes you’ve made that you have not been able to get over. It would seem much easier to just forget these hurts or mistakes. Certainly, it is easier to pretend they do not exist, than to talk about them at any length. As tough as this is to do, this process will very likely be a necessary part of your healing.

A Journey to a Better Life

Your counsellor will journey with you as you learn to forgive yourself or others. Additionally, you will be encouraged to let go, and not let any of the “old stuff” hold you back any longer. Also, your counsellor may also look at your life holistically, and suggest strategies that will help improve your overall health.

The process of raising self-esteem and hence improving self-confidence will take some time. Most importantly, it will require work. Taking the first step is usually the hardest. So give yourself a pat on the back for getting this far. Believe in yourself, and believe that you deserve living a life where you feel confident and capable. Consequently, you will be energized by the many possibilities that await you.

Finally, remember that in counselling, you do not walk alone.
