As your therapist, I will be present alongside you to help you find your voice, face challenges in your life, and grow your confidence to overcome them.
I believe that everyone has a story to tell. Everyone has a unique set of circumstances, or an ordeal that they live through or try to overcome.
These can take the form of one big road-block or event in our life that changes everything. Or they can be small day to day struggles that decrease your overall wellness and life satisfaction.
I am passionate about helping others make changes in their life. After all, we are all more alike than different, and our need to be heard and valued is universal. I feel fortunate to bear witness to my clients’ stories and I am dedicated to assisting them in achieving their goals. Through my intensive research and education in the field of Mental Health, I am capable of helping clients set goals and utilize innovative techniques and strategies to reach those goals.
Farah Dawood’s Counselling Approach
I believe in the counselling process and experience, the one that is non-judgmental & non-shaming. This means having an authentic relationship with someone who encourages and empowers you so that change can occur. In addition to empowerment, my therapy strives to simplify client’s problems to its most simplest forms. We will do this by diving into the details of the problem from every perspective.
Understanding the reasons behind the issues and the background of the problems leads to a type of awareness that drives action. This will in turn produce positive change in the client’s life. It is my privilege and passion to help instill hope and positive change in clients’ lives. My hope is that this will lead them to live in a more unencumbered, committed, and joyful fashion.
I further believe that my clients are the source of the direction for therapy. Therefore, I look forward to being there for my clients on their journey and in helping them to see that they are truly the experts in their lives. Sometimes all that is needed is a little perspective and a whole lot of listening.
I utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy primarily in my work. Additionally, I also use Mindfulness informed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy when helping individuals work through their struggles. The goals of such approaches focus on increasing emotional regulation and assertiveness skills. I also work from a system-based theory approach to understand the individual’s problem in the context of where it originated from.
I also attempt to integrate multiple therapy modalities such as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Solution-focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Reality Therapy. This is to best examine problem solving from a focus on the here and now actions of the client and the ability to create and choose a better future.
Farah Dawood’s Professional Biography
I completed my Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Niagara University in New York, US, and my Bachelor of Science from McMaster University in Hamilton, ON.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors.
My previous experiences include working at a non-profit agency with individuals who have experienced trauma and who are struggling with settlement issues. I also have experience in counselling children, teenagers, families, adults, and couples at multiple agencies in Ontario.
I provide counselling services to individuals of any age dealing with:
• Mental health (depression, anxiety, panic, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, Self harm, and Suicidal Ideations, Bipolar disorder diagnoses)
• Self-esteem, Body Image Issues, Eating Disorders
• Abuse (emotional, physical, sexual)
