Self Care
Self care is one of the most important things that we can do for ourselves.
Taking time to spend on yourself provides an important opportunity to refuel and re-energize. We have mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs that are calling for our attention at the same time.
If we don’t stop and take some time to take care of ourselves, we can easily burn out and not be the best version of ourselves. Giving yourself that gift of time and relaxation is not a luxury, but a necessity for our overall health. If we are in an optimal mental and physical state, we are stronger for the ones we love and in our best shape to perform in school or work.
It is easy to put ourselves last, as we may feel pressured for time to finish our tasks. Perhaps we feel guilty for putting ourselves first. However, when we take care of ourselves, we rejuvenate and replenish are most needed resource – ourselves.
One of my favourite things to do to take care of myself is kayaking. It is my ultimate escape, where I get away from the city life and my perceived demands. As I kayak, I experience peace!
One of my favourite areas to kayak is along the Pitt Meadow Dikes, where on a clear day, the blue sky provides a beautiful backdrop for the white caped mountains, while the lush green landscape meets the serenity of the blue water.
How peaceful it feels to glide along and spot the odd wildlife along the way; an eagle, a heron, swans, ducks, or to spot fish below as I paddle along…. it never disappoints.
I am taken in by the warmth of the sun, the trickling sound of the water rolling of my paddle, the chirps of wildlife in the air, the cool breeze that tickles my skin, and noticing the muscles in my arms, shoulders, torse and upper legs working harmoniously, while my breathing is in sync with my every stoke; so peaceful…
Along my journey, as I glide along in peaceful solitude, I appreciate the visual beauty, and all its wonder. However, most importantly, I appreciate the wonderful harmony I experience physically, mentally, and spiritually within myself as I kayak. I feel so free!
Then, when I drive back to my city life and my demands, I feel lighter, more content and stronger. In fact, I look forward and fully accept the life I had previously escaped from prior to kayaking getaway.
I hope you find time to experience your serene moment and escape to your peaceful place…it’s worth every precious moment… Enjoy!
