Celina Jensen, Counselling Intern | Innova Therapy Coquitlam & Online

I am currently completing my Master of Counselling Psychology degree through Yorkville University. Before entering the counselling field, I spent nearly two decades working in child protection with the United Nations and international aid organizations. My work focused on supporting children and families affected by war, trauma, and displacement – experiences that profoundly shaped my understanding of resilience, healing, and the complexity of the human experience.

Throughout those years, I witnessed how early life experiences shape our sense of self, relationships, and overall well-being. That insight continues to inform my work today, both as a therapist-in-training and in my personal life as a single mother. Parenthood has taught me to meet uncertainty with presence, patience, and compassion – qualities I bring into the therapy room.

At the same time, some of the most transformative learning has come not from my professional or academic roles, but from being a client myself. Sitting on the other side of the room has given me insight into the vulnerability and strength it takes to do this work. Integrating somatic and creative practices, like writing and yoga, with talk therapy has supported a deeper connection to myself. Nature has also been a constant teacher – for clarity, grounding, and renewal. These personal experiences shape how I hold space for others: with attentiveness, humility, and a deep respect for each person’s unique journey.

In addition to my clinical training, I am certified in meditation and yoga instruction and have facilitated mindfulness seminars in workplace settings. Outside of my work, I find balance through hiking local trails, spending time with my child, and nurturing meaningful relationships.

My Counselling Approach

I believe in the mind-body connection and our innate capacity for healing through self-awareness, compassion, and curiosity. My counselling approach is client-centered, trauma-informed, and integrative, drawing from cognitive-behavioural therapy, humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives, solution-focused brief therapy, and mindfulness-based practices. I support individuals facing a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, life transitions, and relationship challenges.

Therapy is a space where you can explore your experiences safely and develop practical tools to navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence and clarity. As a therapist, I will strive to create a space where you feel respected, supported, and heard. I see therapy as a collaborative process – one where we explore your experiences, identify patterns, and work toward meaningful change based on your goals and values. I am committed to fostering a therapeutic relationship rooted in safety, trust, and mutual respect, where you feel empowered in your growth and healing.
